Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris Untuk Guru Non-Bahasa Inggris

Minggu ini adalah pertemuan ke 16 pelatihan Bahasa Inggris untuk sebagian guru di Yayasan Al Muslim Insan Cendekia Bekasi. Saya tidak mengajar di sekolah tersebut, namun ada kesempatan untuk belajar bersama para guru dalam pelatihan bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris ini ditujukan bagi para guru yayasan baik dari KB-TK-SD-SMP-SMA-SMK dari berbagai rumpun mata pelajara baik IPA, IPS maupun Keagamaan. Tidak seluruh guru berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan pelatihan ini. Angkatan tahun ini ada 40 guru yang dipilih oleh Yayasan mendapat giliran mengikuti pelatihan. Ini pelatihan angkatan ketiga yang kami selenggarakan bekerja sama dengan sekolah tersebut, selain English Proficiency Test semacam TOEFL yang pernah kami laksanakan. English Class Activity for Non English Teachers

Para guru non-bahasa Inggris ini diberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris sebagai penunjang aktivitas keseharian guru dalam melaksanakan tugasnya sekaligus upaya meningkatkan kompetensi dan profesionalisme guru. Tidak bisa dipungkiri, saat ini segala hal memang mulai banyak berbau bahasa Inggris, apalagi memasuki AFTA yang menuntut guru SDM Indonesia bersaing dengan mereka dari negara lain. Mau tidak mau, guru pun harus meng-upgrade dirinya untuk menyesuaikan perkembangan, termasuk untuk juga melek TIK. Dua hal yang sulit dipisahkan untuk masuk ke ranah globalisasi adalah kecakapan komunikasi internasional dengan bahasa asing dan kemampuan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi.

Serunya Sharing Bersama Para Guru di Banda Aceh

Baru. Haru. Seru. Tiga kata untuk menggambarkan perjalanan dan pengalaman saya saat berada di Banda Aceh tahun lalu.

Oktober tahun lalu saya berkesempatan mengunjungi Banda Aceh memenuhi undangan untuk membagikan pengalaman mengajar kepada guru-guru di sana. Sebagian besar adalah guru bahasa Inggris, beberapa ada guru Matematika. Mereka adalah para guru yang mengajar di kursus bahasa, dan mengajar di sekolah. Mereka adalah guru-guru baru, masih di bawah lima tahun pengalaman mengajar. Ini pertama kalinya saya menginjakkan kaki di Banda Aceh, ujung Indonesia paling barat, yang dijuluki serambi Mekah.

Movie Class: Pembelajaran Menyenangkan Melalui Pemutaran Film

Nonton Film. Pasti sudah tidak asing lagi bagi para pengajar. Kegiatan ini setidaknya dipilih para pengajar bahasa atau pengajar subject lainnya untuk menyampaikan pesan yang akan disampaikan secara lebih menyenangkan. Kenapa bisa menyenangkan? Bukankah banyak siswa yang tidak suka menonton film apalagi terlalu lama..? Ya, benar. Saya pernah mengalami sendiri, bagaimana siswa kurang antusias menonton film, tetapi itu bisa diatasi, tinggal bagaimana pengajar mendesign aktivitas yang tidak monoton. Salah besar jika pengajar berpikir bahwa menonton film adalah aktivitas paling gampang dan pengajar bisa istirahat sejenak bersantai. It’s more than just watching.

Mungkin tidak banyak subject yang menggunakan film sebagai media pembelajaran, kecuali kelas bahasa Inggris. Entah kenapa, padahal film juga dapat digunakan di kelas non bahasa, non bahasa Inggris tepatnya.

Penggunaan film untuk subject lain baik rumpun Science maupun Social tentu juga dapat dilakukan bahkan untuk beberapa materi pelatihan, yang penting, pengajar dapat memilih tema yang sesuai dengan materi yang akan disampaikan. Apa saja yang perlu diperhatikan dalam menggunakan Movie sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran yang menyenangkan?

GRAMMAR: SECOND CONDITIONAL EXERCISE

The second conditional is used to talk about unreal, impossible or unlikely situations. Like the other conditionals, the form of the second conditional contains an IF CLAUSE and the MAIN CLAUSE. The verb in the If Clause is always in the simple past tense. When the If Clause uses to be, it takes form were. The Main Clause always uses the modal verb would be followed by the base form of the verb.

USING SONGS TO TEACH ENGLISH SKILLS

Song becomes universal language for expressing one’s message. When there is no word or sentence to tell one’s feeling, choosing a song can be one of the ways to say something unspoken. This symptom might happen to all people in various ages. So do our students.

Most of students love to listen or sing a song. It gives idea to busy and tired teachers to use songs in teaching English, and could be teachers of other subjects. How to use songs to help students learn English? What kind of songs is suitable? How to create the activities by those songs? Here I tried to share what I’ve done with songs in my class.

Kinds of business letters are Inquiry Letter, Offering Letter, Letter of Order, Complaint Letter, Promoting Letter, Collection Letter, Personnel Letters, etc.

The rules of good business writing:

• Study your reader’s interest (think first of the reader)
• Adopt the right tone
• Write naturally and sincerely
• Write clearly and to the point
• Be courteous and considerate
• Avoid wordiness
• Avoid commercial jargon
• Write effectively
• Avoid monotony
• Pay attention to the first and the last impression
• Check your letters

OUTING CLASS ACTIVITIES

Just last week, I and my students went to some places around Jakarta. We missed our classes because of the national holiday (This is our country, holidays much more than others). So, we thought OUTING CLASS would be kind of fun way.

Hi, friends…all teachers there… Any plan to go for an outing class?? Not only English class, but also other subjects like Science, Math, Humanities, PE, and many more. Outing class is not only about hanging out, but also learning something from the real world. Outing class is not about moving the classroom outside with the same boring activities like lecturing, taking notes and doing the test. Outing class is more than that. Students will get the real class where everything happened.

Dear teachers, are you interested in bringing out the students from the classroom? Believe me it works! More efforts, more challenges, but more results and more fun! Yeap, you are ready I think. Still confused? You do not know what to do with students in outing class?

SOLUSI MENGAJAR ANAK YANG LEMAH BAHASA INGGRIS

Sebulan terakhir ini saya mengajar private 2 orang siswa kelas 12 (kelas 3 SMA) yang khawatir akan tes Bahasa Inggris di UN nanti. 2 siswa laki-laki yang datang diantar para orang tua nya tersebut saya pikir akan sama dengan siswa SMA kebanyakan yang saya temui. Tapi apa yang terjadi pada pertemuan pertama les Bahasa Inggris itu? Semua di luar dugaan!

Helping students prepare their TOEFL test? have problems in teaching TOEFL preparation? Yup. The common problems are boring and difficult. The students are getting bored of learning the TOEFL items. They also find difficulties in doing the test and understanding the test items. Do u, as a teacher, have solution towards this boring class?

APOLOGIZING: SAYING SORRY

Everyone had ever made mistakes, or at least made  inconveniences to others. For example: you hurt someone’s heart, You broke your friend’s camera, You make noise when others are studying, you come late, etc… What shoud u do when you do those mistakes and inconvenience? Yup! U’re right… You have to say sorry, do apologize.  Sometimes, someone also say sorry to u. As everyone deserves a second chance, then u have to know how to express when you accept the apology.

There are many situations and ways to say sorry and accept apology. As u see in the previous hand outs, usually those situation will be divided into formal, neutral and informal situation.
